Cavan street traders have a new location and Letterkenny hosts the first teetotal sporting fixture in Donegal.

Cavan street traders made the move to the Egg Market at Connolly Street, in the upper end of the town.  Cavan Urban Council designated it a trading area in 1982. The traders spent two years resisting efforts from the Urban Council to move them from the Market Square and have appealed the decision to the circuit court.

Cavan Urban Council was one of the first to establish a designated area for traders. The council was under pressure from local shop keepers who resented the street traders occupying a prime location in the town centre.

Meanwhile the first all teetotaller sporting fixture took place in Letterkenny, County Donegal. The North Donegal Regional Pioneer Total Abstinence Association’s Athletic Day was opened by Bishop of Raphoe Most Reverend Dr Seamus Hegarty.

The competitors, committee and judges were all non drinkers.

A feature of the Letterkenny event was the family atmosphere where parents and children relaxed and enjoyed soft drinks with their crisps.
