'Sign of the Times', a new monthly half-hour television programme for the deaf on RTÉ One.

'Sign of the Times' will be presented by Josephine O'Leary and Pat Matthews.

Intended to lessen the isolation felt by the deaf people in the community.

The programme will deal with matters of topical interest to the thirteen thousand deaf people throughout the country.

Producer of the programme Philip McGovern talks about the importance of having a programme with sign language and sub-titles so that a deaf audience can fully follow the programme. Making this type of programme brings challenges. The production team had to learn sign language so that they could communicate properly with the presenters.

We've learnt sign pretty easily and we can communicate ok.

The programme is presented in Irish Sign Language (ISL).

An RTÉ News report broadcast on 29 September 1988. The reporter is Kevin McDonald.
