Charles Haughey visits the tiny island of Inishturk off the coast of Mayo to officially switch on the electricity supply.

Charles Haughey came to Inisturk to turn on the island's electricity supply bringing power to the islander's homes. This was the the first visit of a Taoiseach to the island in nearly 50 years, the last being Éamon de Valera.

The Taoiseach arrives on the island in an Air Corps helicopter before switching on the ESB power supply to the delight of islanders. The new electricity generating station on the island means that inhabitants no longer have to rely on generators. Other visiting dignitaries for the occasion included Minister of State Denis Gallagher and MEP Mark Killilea.
