Paintings commissioned by the ESB on display in Clare.

An exhibition of paintings commissioned by the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) opens at the De Valera Public Library in Ennis.

The ESB is not often thought of as a patron of the arts but in its early days it had many of the characteristics of a missionary society trying to spread the gospel of electrification in an apathetic country.

This message was promoted by every possible means from newspaper advertising and film, to lectures and art. The ESB also got valuable mileage from the paintings of Seán Keating who later became President of the Royal Hibernian Academy.

Another artist John Keating received the commission for the Money Point Portfolio of paintings. The work of both artists is on display at the De Valera Public Libary in Ennis, County Clare.
