In 1971 Ireland adopted Value Added Tax (VAT) in preparation for joining the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1973. But what exactly was it and how did people react to its introduction?

'Enterprise' went out on to the streets of Dublin to find out what people knew if anything about this new taxation. There are mixed levels of knowledge about what it is exactly but one man sums it up saying

I think it's going to increase costs all round.

Others raise questions about the cost of implementing the new tax.

This report by Michael Ryan for 'Enterprise' was broadcast on 29 November 1971.

'Enterprise' was a series of topical reports on developments in money, industry and science, and how they affect the people of Ireland. The series was presented by Michael Ryan and directed by Ted Dolan.
