The Cork Jazz Festival officially opens with the chiming of the Bells of Shandon at Saint Anne's Church.

Performing at the foot of the famous Cork steeple are the Dejan's Olympia Brass Band from New Orleans, the cradle of jazz.

The weekend long jazz festival is worth £4 million to Cork. The event is sponsored by Guinness who have provided £250,000 to provide music in 35 pubs and hotels around the city. It is expected that the festival will attract around thirty thousand people.

The festival began in 1978 with a budget of just £7,000. Nine years on, it has established itself as a leading international event.

The city by the Lee is swinging to the sound of jazz.
