Over the last week at least two aircraft connected with the United States Air Force are believed to have landed at Shannon Airport. None were carrying combat troops.

Following the latest announcement by the Department of Foreign Affairs more aircraft connected with the American Gulf War effort are now expected to land at Shannon.

Already troops from the United States Southern Command have been moved into the airport and an anti-terrorist Gardaí unit has been mobilised. Uniformed Gardaí are assisting airport security to implement stringent new security measures. Parking has been strictly controlled and people entering the airport are being thoroughly searched. Suggestions that airport staff will not comply to serve war connected flights have so far proved unfounded.

No US aircraft connected with the Gulf have so far landed at Shannon Airport. However landings for refuelling could take place over the next few days.
