A new radio station for Kerry is officially opened in Tralee by the Taoiseach.
Charles Haughey interrupted his holiday on Inishvickillane, his own private Blasket Island, to officiate at the occasion. Among the dignitaries and guests attending the launch was the Kerry poet Brendan Kennelly. Mr Haughey composed a special poem for the occasion, 'Over the Waves',
I pray the future will bring you blessings
And that happy news will be your share
As I am happy to declare this morning that the Kingdom of Kerry is on the air
Radio Kerry would broadcast on 97FM from its offices in Tralee. It cost £360,000 to set it up, and aimed to reach an audience of almost 250,000 people. Its chief executive Dan Collins hoped that it would follow in the public service tradition of RTÉ.
