Over one thousand independent record shops around the world will take part in Record Store Day.

At least a dozen record shops in Ireland will take part in selling limited edition records, hosting in-store gigs with local talent and offering discounts.

Two of the Dublin shops taking part are Tower Records and Beatfinder Records. Both shops are 100 per cent independently Irish owned and are store rather than internet based.

Gerry Molumby, Beatfinder Records, says that the purpose of Record Store Day is,

To make people aware that there are still independent record stores in this country and worldwide.

As more and more people access or buy music online, Gerry says that the purpose of the day is to make people aware that they can still come into a shop and order whatever they want.

Shane Arrowsmith of Tower Records, says that Record Store Day is a chance to highlight local talent and the shop itself.

We all love what we do.

Niall Stokes, Editor of Hot Press magazine, believes it is important to celebrate the local music store in the face of change in the way people consume music. There is a level of pressure on record shops from internet suppliers which did not exist ten years ago.

The point is that you can't download vinyl.
