The "deadly, dangerous and murky" world of cigarette smuggling is investigated in this episode of 'Prime Time'.
Keelin Shanley looks at the murky world of cigarette smuggling and the huge profits for criminals involved.
According to the report 1 in every 3 cigarettes produced disappears from the records when it leaves the factory gates. More and more of them are being smuggled illegally into Ireland generating millions for the criminals involved. Cigarettes are smuggled in through the ports and airports, and sold on at just a fraction of the normal retail price.
Due to the size of the illegal trade, there is a special customs and excise team dedicated solely to cigarette smuggling.
The programme follows Mick Downey, Senior Investigator, Revenue Commissioners who is investigating a consignment of illegal tobacco, which is concealed in bedroom cabinets.
