Galway stay on track to retain Connacht title with win over Mayo.

A strong display from the Galway defence and the only goal of the game were enough to see off Mayo in a low scoring Connacht football semi final. A packed St Jarlath's Park in Tuam witnessed a sometimes tetchy encounter between the two rivals. Emmet Farrell of Galway and John Carey of Mayo traded early points. The home crowd really came to life when Frank Canavan caught a Liam Sammon ball turned and blasted it to the Mayo net. Straight from the restart Galway followed up with another score a point from Jimmy Duggan.

Galway had been playing with the aid of a strong wind and must have been disappointed with a half time total of 1-05. Mayo started the second half strongly scoring three points to only trail by one. It was seventeen minutes before a Liam Sammon free gave Galway the first of only two second half points. Mayo failed to score again and when Mick Rooney was fouled after a strong run another Sammon free restored the Galway lead to three points.

The match was played 27 June 1971 and the final score was Galway 1-07 Mayo 0-07.
