Archaeologists are discovering more about past life in Armagh.

A theory among historians suggests that Armagh was not really the traditional Chirstian centre of Ireland. Despite the association with Saint Patrick it was chosen as the ecclesiastical centre of Ireland for political rather than spiritual reasons. Either way, Armagh is a city that,

An archaeological dig is taking place behind the Bank of Ireland on Scotch Street, in the vicinity of Cathedral Hill, which may have been the site of Patrick’s first church.

The team is headed by Chris Lynn from the Northern Ireland Department of the Environment. So far they have established that people lived here during the Early Mediaeval period.

Downpatrick is said to be where Ireland’s patron saint is buried. Might new evidence relating to his final resting place be unearthed here in Armagh?
