A Catholic Mass is celebrated at Trinity College Dublin for the first time in 55 years.

Trinity College Dublin Catholic chaplain, Rev Brendan Heffernan, said Mass in the college examination hall. It was attended by Provost Dr A.J. McConnell, Vice-Provost Dr Herbert Parke, along with members of staff and the student body.

In the 400 year history of TCD Mass has been celebrated on the campus on only two previous occasions. In 1689, a Catholic provost offered Mass for troops after the college was seized and the Fellows expelled under the reign of James II. More than two centuries later, in 1916, a British Army chaplain celebrated Mass for soldiers who were stationed in the college grounds during the Easter Rising.
