A week of events to celebrate the life and work of John Millington Synge closes in Dublin.
At the house in Churchtown, where John Millington (JM) Synge was born in 1871 Dublin City Commissioner John Garvin unveils a plaque to honour the writer and playwright.
A major figures of the Irish literary revival, JM Synge's plays include 'The Playboy of the Western World’, ‘Riders To The Sea’ and ‘Deirdre of the Sorrows’.
During the past week Synge enthusiasts from around the world have been in Dublin to celebrate the centenary of his birth. A programme of events has been taking place in the capital which included public lectures, panel discussions and special performances of his plays at The Abbey and Peacock theatres.
'That Rooted Man' was an RTÉ Television produced documentary to celebrate the centenary, while the Thomas Davis Lectures on RTÉ Radio focused on Synge’s works.
Exhibitions at Trinity College Library and the National Gallery provide JM Synge scholars and fans with a wide range of material and the opportunity to learn about his social milieu.
