Taoiseach Charles Haughey is one of many enjoying the County Clare Agricultural Show Society in Ennis.

The inaugural County Clare Agricultural Show Society took place on 15 August 1905 to promote, encourage and develop high standards in a wide range of farm enterprises for the rural community.

The 76th County Clare Agricultural Show for the first time ever is a three day event, taking place in Ennis from 15 to 18 August 1980.

With over 100 exhibit stands and a huge increase in entries for the horse and cattle classes.

Some of the top riders in the country take part in the 20 showjumping competitions, including an international team event.

Shannon Development Company hosts an exhibition of small industries in the mid west region. Shannon Development officer for County Clare John Costelloe, is impressed with the degree of interest visitors have in small indigenous industry.

As with every agricultural show, the Clare event has its share of machinery on display. Due to recent setbacks in agriculture however, there is a discernible downturn in the market.

On the final day of the show, Charles Haughey pays his first official visit to county Clare as Taoiseach, and attends the Clare Agricultural Show for the first time. He highlights the show's political element. Traditionally, it is held on 15 August, the date in 1923 when Éamon de Valera was arrested in Ennis.

So they continue to hold it on that day for some reason best known to themselves.
