Druid Theatre creates an epic theatre experience by combining four Shakespeare plays into one drama.
The latest Druid Theatre project condenses four works into a six hour long production. Writer Mark O'Rowe has adapted William Shakespeare's Richard II, Henry IV parts one and two, and Henry V.
Among the 13 strong cast is actor Aisling O'Sullivan in the role of Prince Hal. Artistic Director at Druid Theatre, Garry Hynes admits that the six hour production places big demands on the actors and the audience. However, she believes the payoff is an experience that is not the same as a regular theatre performance.
The size and scale of the production mean that additional space is being used to stage the drama. The excavated hall of the Red Earl, opposite The Mick Lally Theatre in Galway is central to the action. Stage and Costume Designer Francis O'Connor explains how the spaces have been transformed. One of the big challenges for such a mammoth production is the provision of costumes for all the characters.
Actor Aaron Monaghan describes the performance as a marathon for both the audience and actors.
DruidShakespeare runs in Galway until the end of the month before touring nationwide.
