Following a 1- 0 win against Bolivia in preparation for the World Cup the Republic of Ireland soccer team is in London for a promotional event.
Sheffield Wednesday's John Sheridan was the Republic of Ireland scorer in Lansdowne Road.

A black tie dinner event sponsored by Guinness is held in London's Café Royal to celebrate the soccer squad and Jack Charlton’s achievements in reaching the World Cup finals in the United States. Defenders Paul McGrath and Alan Kernaghan remain in Dublin and do not partake in the celebration banquet.
The dinner is attended by the Taoiseach Albert Reynolds, the Irish Ambassador Joseph Small and 600 guests including leading personalities from sport, politics, show business and the arts.
Albert Reynolds was not at the match in Lansdowne Road but believes the win is a good omen.

The Taoiseach will be attending the World Cup matches but before that, he must meet the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom John Major to discuss the progress of their joint peace declaration.
