Supported by the National Union of Journalists and SIPTU a campaign calls for the repeal of Section 31 of the Broadcasting Act.

Under Section 31 of the Broadcasting Act RTÉ is prohibited from broadcasting interviews with Sinn Féin or other proscribed organisations.

The Let In The Light campaign was set up following a conference on censorship in January. The campaign made a submission to Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht Michael D Higgins, who recently announced he is looking at the future of the broadcasting ban.

At a press conference today the campaign argued that Section 31 has distorted broadcasting coverage of events in Northern Ireland. Campaigners suggest that any new policy should be based on prohibiting a very restricted number of classes of speech which would allow,

Patrick Smyth from Let In The Light says that the ban underestimates the modern audience. Section 18 of the Broadcasting Act will prevent manipulation and incitement through the airwaves,
