A new approach to bring RTÉ Radio 2 listeners the latest and breaking news stories.

Local, national and international news is prepared daily in the RTÉ Newsroom. RTÉ Radio 2 now plans to include timely news reports as part of its schedule.

If a big story breaks, they'll break into the programme to tell the public.

Head of news at Radio 2, Leo Enright, says that breaking stories on the channel will have a snappier presentation and will be quite different from anything anyone has heard in Ireland.

We'll be injecting a certain personality of our own into the way the news is broadcast.

Newscaster Richard Crowley opened the new Radio 2 news service this morning. Leo Enright has assembled a relatively young, enthusiastic team around him to deliver the news service.

Radio 2 News is a whole new news service, it's a news service for a whole new generation.

The team includes well known faces from RTÉ News on television Michael Fisher, Conor McAnally, Richard Crowley and Vere Wynn Jones who has moved from sports reporting.

Leo Enright says that a Radio 2 news bulletin will last about two minutes.

I think what people want is to know the news and to know it when it happens.

Radio 2 has already proved its worth when it comes to reporting news of importance. Coverage of the Cherryville rail disaster just a week ago was a good example of providing public service information as it happens. Radio 2 reporters stayed on air throughout the night to cover the tragic events as they unfolded. The Radio 2 news team also plan to give local news its fair share of air time with an emphasis on stories that do not normally make the national news headlines.

A report from Ballybunnion, we'll treat with the same seriousness as something coming from Beirut.
