RTÉ launches a dial up news and sports service for the Irish community living abroad.

The RTÉ Phone Line service will be initially available around the clock on the telephone network in Britain and Northern Ireland. There are plans to extend the service further afield.

The new service was inaugurated by Minister for Communications Ray Burke.

Welcome to the RTÉ phone line. This is the latest news from Dublin.

The news will be updated several times a day by Aertel staff using broadcast material from Radio 1 and 2FM bulletins. The service comes at a cost of 33 pence a minute off peak.

There are plans to extend the service to the United States and other countries where there are large Irish communities.

The primary aim is to provide a service to the Irish abroad.
