The work of playwright Brian Friel is celebrated at the Magill Summer School in Donegal.

Every summer since 1981 the week-long MacGill Summer School has taken place in Glenties County Donegal. A festival of talks and events covering a diverse range of subjects, this year the programme also honours playwright Brian Friel.

It is appropriate that Brian Friel is celebrated here in Glenties, the home place of his mother and her family, says his friend Seamus Heaney,

It’s a triumphant moment for Friel, and a proper one that it should be happening here.

The official opening will be performed by Tánaiste Mary Coughlan this evening in advance of what Glenties and the MacGill Summer School hope will be,

A memorable week.
