The 'Festival of Friel' in Paris marks Brian Friel's 80th birthday and celebrates the work of one of Ireland's finest dramatists.
The Irish Culture Centre on Rue des Irlandais was once the Irish College for training priests for Ireland. Dramatist Brian Friel had himself spent three years as a clerical student in Maynooth and now is being honoured for his work at the former seminary in Paris.
Among those at the ceremony paying tribute to Brian Friel were Ireland's ambassador in Paris, celebrated French actor Laurent Terzieff and playwright and novelist Thomas Kilroy who describes Friel as,
The grand master of Irish theatre.
The 'Festival of Friel' consists of a series of talks and screenings about the playwright as well as performances of his work. Seven new translations of Brian Friel plays have also been published in French.
