A fin whale has washed up on a beach in County Waterford.
The whale carcass which measures just under twenty metres in length was found on a small beach near the village of Bunmahon (also known as Bonmahon) on the Waterford coast.
Marine scientist Dr Paul Hillis who is based at the Fisheries Research Centre at Abbotstown in Dublin travelled to Bunmahon to examine the male whale. Further research is required to confirm if it is a blue whale or a fin whale. Thoughts are that this is a fin whale.
The second largest species of whale known in the world.
