Groups of Wren Boys compete with displays of dance and music in Newcastle West, County Limerick.
Crowds turned out in Newcastle West to see ten groups of Wren Boys take part in a competition. The groups dressed in traditional costumes, carried torches and playing musical instruments paraded through the streets before performing on a platform set up in the town square.
Playwright Bryan McMahon was the judge of the competition and praised the promoters in their efforts to preserve the tradition of the Wren Boys. Bryan McMahon was assisted with the judging by Mr P Collery and Mr MF Lynch.
Two groups from Strand West in Limerick and Ballymacoll in Meath came in joint first position.
