A marine festival in Cork celebrates the history of The Royal Cork Yacht Club. Established in 1720 it is the oldest yacht club in the world. Warships from Finland and Sweden joined the celebrations in what was the largest fleet of yachts ever seen in Cork port.
The biggest fleet of yachts ever to make its way to the centre of the city gathering for a unique occasion.
A book that gives the history of the club was also launched. Admiral Peter Crowley explains how the yacht club and Cork city have been inextricably linked. The book 'Royal Cork Yacht Club', was launched by Lord Inchiquin who is a descendant of one of the original founders of the club.
Lord Inchiquin was fascinated by some of the early rules of the club relating to inclusion and exclusion of members which are set out in the book.
You couldn’t have someone who was in trade as a member of the Royal Yacht Club.
