A look back to 1989 at the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race, now called the Volvo Ocean Race.
The Whitbread Race began in England in 1972, sponsored by the company Whitbread and the Royal Navy Sailing Association. In 2001 sponsorship of the race was taken over by Volvo.
The 1989 race began and ended in Southampton. Ireland started the race as fifth favourite. However, it was New Zealand won the race. The winning skipper was Peter Blake and the winning yacht, the Steinlager 2, both from New Zealand.
