A photograph of a dress becomes a viral sensation as people on social media disagree on the colours of the garment.

The image of a dress posted to social media blogging website Tumblr has sparked an international online debate about its colour.

It's the dress that’s got everyone tweeting.

Gold and white or blue and black, the debate has dominated conversation on most social media platforms and has highlighted the differences in how we perceive colour.

Celebrities and social media influencers have been having their say. Kim Kardashian West has taken to Twitter to ask why she and her husband Kanye see the colour of the dress differently.  Ellen DeGeneres tweeted that the world would be forever divided.

On the streets of Dublin people’s views on what colours they see in the dress are also divided.

Experts say that the difference in opinion is due to the way that we perceive colour.

According to Dr Mark Cahill, Irish College of Ophthalmologists, some people are discounting certain colours that they see.

Designer of the dress Michele Bastock sets the record straight saying that they made a royal blue dress which sometimes appears as gold and ivory or blue and black on screen.

Confirmation of the true colour hasn’t stopped the talk about the dress.
