Frenzy across Ireland as the National Lottery prize fund exceeds one million pounds.
By lunchtime the computer at the headquarters of the National Lottery in Dublin showed that a staggering £2,000 was being spent every minute on the Lotto. By evening, three quarters of a million people had bought a lottery ticket spending one and a half million pounds in just over twelve hours.
Owner of a Dublin shop, Pat Bracken, said he had never seen anything like it.
This is the big week of the million.
The numbers were drawn on RTÉ television. At 10.00 pm, the champagne was being popped as the National Lottery confirmed that there was one jackpot winner.
Tom Fitzpatrick, Director of the National Lottery said there had been lotto mania across the whole country with one in every two adults playing this week.
