The people of Moneygall, Offaly are hopeful Barack Obama will win the United States presidential election.
While the world waits to see whether Democratic Party candidate Barack Obama or Republican Party candidate John McCain wins the United States presidential election, Moneygall in County Offaly has a particular interest in the outcome, as the village is the ancestral home of Barack Obama.
Obama’s link to Moneygall comes from Falmouth Kearney who emigrated to the United States of America in 1850. Church of Ireland Rector, Canon Stephen Neill, the man who confirmed Barack Obama's ancestral roots with Moneygall says
Monegall people are proud of this man who they have adopted as a son of the town.
Many Moneygall locals are gathered in Ollie Hayes’s bar for an election party, including Henry Healy, a distant relative of Barack Obama. He would like to see the village extending an invite to Obama, if, as they hope, he becomes the 44th President of the United States.
Performing in the pub is the band Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys, who have written a humorous song for Obama called ‘There's No One as Irish as Barack O'Bama’. Band member Gerard Corrigan says the group have been booked to play at Democratic Party events as Obama’s team think the song is very amusing.
