A Dáil debate is underway on the government decision to guarantee all deposits and borrowings in six Irish banks and building societies.

Speaking in the Dáil the Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan explains the rationale behind the Credit Institutions Protection Bill.

When finance, the very lifeblood of our economy is a matter of concern, the house will appreciate that we must move swiftly and decisively.

Brian Lenihan thanks the opposition parties for their cooperation in pushing through the legislation. Fine Gael spokesman on finance Richard Bruton said

That the government's proposals were the right thing to do at this time.
