The annual blessing of animals ceremony takes place at Smithfield Horse Fair in Dublin.

To mark the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment, all creatures great and small are attending the annual blessing of the animals in Smithfield Horse Fair in Dublin.

The monthly horse fair at Smithfield usually attracts traders from all over Dublin and beyond. However on this occasion, alongside the usual young owners of ponies and horses, owners of cats and dogs are also gathered in the cobblestoned square. One small boy is even carrying his pet rabbit in a box.

The blessing is carried out by a Capuchin friar from the nearby Church Street and many of those present are visibly delighted to be taking part in the ritual.
