50 years after the only All-Ireland Final held outside the country Kerry and Cavan return to New York to play their National League fixture.
The 1947 All-Ireland Football Final between Kerry and Cavan was played at the Polo Grounds in New York. The 50th anniversary of the game was marked when the same two teams played their National League fixture at Downing's Stadium in New York. A crowd of 8,000 turned out for a unique Irish sporting occasion.
Maurice Fitzgerald was the star of the show scoring 1-10 of the Kerry total. In the highlights here Cavan goalkeeper Peter O'Dowd makes a double save to deny Maurice Fitzgerald a goal. Fitzgerald scores from a point from the resulting 45. When Mike Frank Russell was taken down, the referee awarded a penalty which Fitzgerald scored to leave Kerry leading 1-08 to Cavan 0-07.
The final score was Kerry 1-12 Cavan 0-08.
