The people have spoken, the votes have been counted and verified, and Michael D Higgins is declared the ninth President of Ireland.

Michael D Higgins says he wants to be President for all the people of Ireland. He believes the result has given him a very clear mandate from the people having secured in excess of a million votes. In his acceptance speech he pays tribute to the Labour Party, his family and the people of Ireland.

I am particularly grateful to the more than a million people who have said that I am acceptable to them as the ninth President of Ireland.

Looking to the future he emphasised the importance of the values of equality, respect, participation as elements of citizenship.

Presidential Returning Officer Ríona Ní Fhlanghaile declared the result following the fourth and final count.
