University lecturer Michael D Higgins is looking to be elected to the European Parliament in the constituency of Connacht Ulster.

Michael D Higgins is based in Galway city and is Chairman of the Labour Party. The 37 year old lectures in Sociology and Political Science at University College Galway (UCG).

Michael D Higgins says that although personalities are important in a European election social and political issues still matter. Campaigning door to door, accompanied by his wife Sabina, he is enthused by the fact that people are willing to use their vote well and are showing an interest in the socialist cause.

People are showing a great deal of interest in using their vote well and not wasting it.

Michael D Higgins polled 13,062 votes but failed to win a seat.
