Galway are champions after defeating Roscommon in replay of the Connacht Football Final on the 19 July 1976 .
The drawn game had been played in blistering heat but the weather for the replay of the Connacht final between Galway and Roscommon was wet and windy. Roscommon supporters among the 16,000 crowd packed into Tuam stadium had to wait until the 13th minute to see a score for their team from a Mick Freyne free. By then Galway had already posted 1-05 and they extended their lead with further scores from Joe McLoughlin.
When a nice move with some neat footwork from John O'Connor whose shot was then tipped over the bar by Galway's Gay Mitchell resulted in a point Roscommon were still 8 points behind.
With the wind behind them in second half Roscommon started brightly with points from Mick McNamara and John O'Gara but were never able to bridge the gap and Galway ran out winners by 8 points.
The highlights shown here are taken from footage shot for Sports Stadium broadcast 24 July 1976. The final score was Galway 1-14 Roscommon 0-09
