Life in An Cheathrú Rua for a student from San Francisco who has come to Ireland to learn Irish.

In 1968 Maya Tsuji was one of six American students who were in Cork to learn Irish when the 'Féach' team met them. In April the following year reporter Breandán Ó hEithir met up with Maya who was now living in An Cheathrú Rua and asked her about life in rural Galway and her progress in learning Irish.

Maya tells Breandán that when she moved to An Cheathrú Rua at first it was a little difficult to understand what people were saying but they were nice and understood most of what she was saying. People have told her that life was hard in the area in the past but is better now. Maya spoke to a couple of people who were returned emigrants from England where life had also been hard and they preferred to be home again,

Dúirt siad go raibh sé an-deacair agus crua fadó. Dúirt siad freisin go raibh sé níos fearr anois...is féidir leo a labhairt liom faoi.

After her stay in An Cheathrú Rua Maya will go to Belfast or Dublin to write her paper before returning to university in America. Although life is very different living in a big city like San Franciso Maya feels she has learned a lot in her time in Ireland about life and the language. She hopes not to forget the Irish she has learned and that one day she will return to An Cheathrú Rua and see the friends she has made there.

This episode of 'Féach' was broadcast 20 April 1969.
