Mayo were back in the All Ireland Football Final for the first time since 1996 and hopes were high that the county could win their first title since 1951. Opponents Kerry were seeking their 33rd title.

The match started brightly for Mayo who following an Alan Dillon goal led by two points. A run of scores put Kerry ahead before a terrific goal from Colm 'Gooch' Cooper after 25 minutes really ended the game as a contest. The score at that stage was Kerry 1-10 Mayo 1-03.

Shown here are some of the early scores in the game. Keep an eye out for Éamonn Fitzmaurice's pass to Cooper for his goal. Fitzmaurice will be the Kerry manager in next Sunday's All Ireland Final against Donegal.

The final score was Kerry 1-20 Mayo  2-09.
