Members of the environmental group Earthwatch held a fridge protest outside Leinster House on 15 September 1989. They dumped old fridges there in protest at the government's inaction on the issue of chlorofluorocarbons. According to Marcus McCabe, PRO of Earthwatch, there is as much a problem with CFCs as with aerosols. When fridges are crushed on dumps, CFC gases escape and damage the ozone layer. Gardaí on duty said the fridges would be taken away by Dublin Corporation.
