Former U.S. President General Dwight D. 'Ike' Eisenhower and family came to Ireland on a four-day visit. On his arrival in Ireland, he was greeted by his friend and former Irish President Sean T. O'Kelly. General Eisenhower was Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces for the Normandy landings in 1944 and later Supreme Allied Commander of NATO forces in Europe after the World War II.
During his press conference in Dublin Eisenhower spoke about whether Ireland should join NATO. On the threat of nuclear war he said, "I don't believe any nation is so foolish as to push the other one to the point where there would be no recourse."
