While both sides of the dispute were in talks at the Labour Court in October 1985, the strike escalated when joined by Brendan Barron of the Crumlin branch of Dunnes Stores. The 19-year-old student had been working in Dunnes as a part-time packer when he was transferred to a lane where he would have to handle South African goods.
