Freak weather brought a mini tornado leaving a trail of damage just outside the town of Bailieborough in Cavan.

A number of property owners a mile outside of the town of Bailieborough (Bailieboro) in County Cavan are assessing damage to their homes, which is believed to have been caused by a mini tornado.

There were no injuries, but the twister lifted roofs off a number of houses, damaged sheds and uprooted some trees in Shercock Road. Power to the area was also cut.

Met Éireann, the Irish National Meteorological Service, confirmed they received reports about a tornado, however they had no instruments on the ground near where it struck. Spokesperson for the Climate Division of Met Éireann Peter Lennon said judging by the damage caused and an examination of radar images of the weather conditions in the area on the day, all the evidence points to the likelihood that it was indeed a tornado.
