Designer Philip Treacy recalls beginning to sew and how he developed his craft as milliner.

Philip Treacy graduated from the Royal College of Art with a Masters degree in Fashion Design last year and has quickly become the most sought after milliner in London.

His hats have formed part of John Galliano and Lanvin collections at Paris Fashion Week.

The glamorous world of fashion is a far cry from the small rural village of Ahascragh County Galway, where Philip Treacy grew up. He learned how to sew while at national school, under the tutelage of his teacher Mrs McDonagh. All pupils learned a new skill as a result,

When I finished, everybody was sewing.

Work experience in London with renowned British milliner Stephen Jones honed his skills, and it was there he learned that,

Millinery is a craft.

From promoting the Chelsea Flower Show to high fashion at Ascot, the majority of Philip Treacy’s hats are one-of-a-kind creations. He designs hats for his couture clients but firmly believes that there is a hat for everybody.
