Major department stores in Dublin are the target for firebomb attacks.

A total of 14 firebombs are planted in nine major stores, and the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin. The incendiary devices were found in Woolworth premises on Grafton Street and Henry Street, Kapp and Peterson, Switzers, Arnotts on Liffey Street and Henry Street, Eason and Son on O'Connell Street and Penneys on Mary Street.

In Arnotts, the incendiary device activated the sprinkler system and the blaze quickly extinguished. Similarly at Eason bookstore, the blaze active the automatic sprinkler and alarm systems. Penneys store had minor damage from an incendiary device.

The Gardaí have asked the public to keep a look-out for suspicious packages and report them immediately.

All the stores that were bombed will be open for business as usual in the morning, as in most cases damage is only slight.
