Thousands take part in a demonstration to show opposition to the introduction of water charges.
Tens of thousands of people have attended the Right2Water demonstration in Dublin. Two separate groups marched from Heuston and Connolly train stations before meeting at the GPO on O'Connell Street. Speakers, political parties and trade unions addressed the crowd, calling for the abolition of water charges. There was a large Garda presence, but the protest passed off peacefully.
Protesters from around the country came to the capital to voice their opposition to the proposed charges, with many saying they will not pay.
Here to remind the government of their continued opposition to water charges.
Joan Collins TD addressed the protesters at the GPO and outlined the objective to defeat the water charges.
Dave Gibney of the Right2Water campaign says there is a need for a nationwide discussion on what the people want rather than being dictated to by the government. Right2Water say that their campaign will continue until water charges are abolished.
A spokesperson said they recognised the right of people to protest, but the government was committed to correcting years of under investment in the water network.
