Roy Bedell in creating images for the RTÉ Guide left a remarkable photographic record of televison and radio output.
Formally with Tony O'Malley Pictures Limited, Royden (Roy) Bedell became the first stills photographer with the RTÉ Guide (originally the RTV Guide). Unlike the staff photographers with the RTÉ Stills Department, Roy Bedell shot exclusively for the guide. His images shot on 2"square or 35-millimetre film negatives were used to illustrate cover stories, features and listings.
From 1962 to approximately 1978, Roy Bedell created a unique visual record of the television and radio programmes made and broadcast by RTÉ television (originally Telefís Éireann). His work features guests, presenters, and the staff involved in the production of light entertainment, drama, music, and current affairs output. His output included shots of iconic RTÉ Television drama series such as 'Tolka Row', 'The Riordans' and 'Insurrection'. He was also on hand to photograph entertainment shows featuring contemporary singers and musicians.
Roy Bedell’s RTÉ Guide negatives are a hugely significant part of RTÉ Archives. Ensuring his photographic legacy lives on, over 12,000 negatives have been digitised and catalogued and are available to view online. Roy Bedell's images will continue to inform, inspire and provide enjoyment.
