The school on Inis Treabhair off the Connemara coast has just five pupils.
The Molloys are one of half a dozen families still living on Inis Treabhair near Leitir Móir (Lettermore) off the coast of Galway. Josie Molloy brings Aonghus McAnally to the island school which has five pupils and one teacher. At one point there would have been 20 pupils in the school. All lessons are taught through Irish as Inis Treabhair is part of the Gaeltacht.
Even the dog only answers to Irish commands.
The school building was built on the island in 1900. However, the school was founded in 1979. The roll books kept since the foundation are stored in a classroom cupboard. The attendance was noted in English until 1922 there after they are recorded in Irish. Many of Josie Molloy's ancestors attended the school and their details were documented in the rolls.
This episode of 'Youngline' was broadcast on 11 October 1979. The presenter is Aonghus McAnally.
This is the first of three consecutive ‘Youngline’ episodes to feature the Molloy family. Each programme highlights a different aspect of life on Inis Treabhair.
'Youngline' was a once-weekly, half-hour magazine show for younger viewers. The first programme was broadcast on Tuesday, 23 November 1976, and continued until May 1984.
