Preparations for the Rosc '84 exhibition at the newly restored Guinness Hop Store in Dublin.

The Guinness brewery Hop Store on Rainsford Street will have a new use. This Dublin industrial landmark joins the Pearse Street 19th-century factory tower, now an Irish Development Agency (IDA) enterprise and craft centre, and the John Power and Sons Distillery which is houses the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) as all three have been imaginatively conserved and put to new use.

Managing director of Arthur Guinness, Son and Company Limited, Paddy Galvin explains the history of the Hop Store. Although the19th century industrial architecture is in good repair, it has needed a lot of investment to transform it into art exhibition space.

The Hop Store will house the Guinness Museum and Visitors' Centre as well as contemporary art exhibitions. There are also plans to work with the local community in The Liberties to put the building to good use on their behalf.

This building has a lot to offer in that regard.

The Guinness Hop Store's inaugural show is the prestigious modern art exhibition Rosc ’84. It is four years since the last Rosc exhibition,

Usually controversial this year’s show will probably follow in that tradition.

Rosc ’84 will take place from 19 August - 17 November 1984. In preparation, gallery staff are busy installing works of art showcasing the work of fifty-two artists.
