A new venue for civil marriages opens at the former Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital in Dublin.

Minister for Health Brian Cowen performed the official opening ceremony today for the Eastern Health Board's new Civil Marriages Centre.

Located in the Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital complex on Lower Grand Canal Street, the refurbished lecture theatre has seating for up to sixty guests. Up to now marriages had taken place in the former hospital boardroom.

The numbers of civil marriages have been on the rise since the introduction of divorce in Ireland, as registrar Teresa Byrne explains,

It’s an option they have now.

Six couples tied the knot today, among them a couple from Tallaght. Joy Davidson and her husband exchanged vows and are happy with how the ceremony went,

It was lovely.
