Ripped denim jeans are popular with customers at the vintage clothes shop Flip.

Imelda O'Donnell and partner Frank McQuade are the founders of Flip - the Spirit of the 50's Limited, a second hand clothing shop on Upper Fownes Street in Dublin’s Temple Bar.

When Flip first opened it generally sold vintage suede and leather garments. Now,

People know that if they’re looking for 501s they can come to Flip and know that we probably have the best selection in Dublin.

Ripped original Levi’s 501 jeans are a huge trend for 1988. Not everyone understands this fashion statement. Mothers often come into Flip fuming that their children have been intentionally sold worn out clothing.

According to Imelda O'Donnell, Flip patrons are mainly country and western bands, their fans, fans of the pop band Bros and even Bros themselves. Brosettes (female fans of Bros) June, Karen, Leena and Sandra all love to shop in Flip.

Many Flip customers like to customise their jeans. Aongus Murtagh sows patches and draws flowers on his jeans. Another customer cuts them up,

Because they’re second hand you don’t feel guilty about buying a new pair and wrecking them.

Imelda O’Donnell believes the big trend for 1989 will be denim dungarees. Currently, the best selling dungarees are oversized. They are worn ripped, baggy and faded.

Dungarees look great worn with a white t-shirt, the legs rolled up and Doctor Martens boots. Imelda O’Donnell also suggests,

If you have an all over tan, you know you can show it off maybe there’s a rip or two in the bum and in the legs.

She warns that ripped dungarees are also very unpopular with Irish mothers.
