An edition of a book by Cicero has been identified at the Kings Inns Library in Dublin.

The book 'On Old Age' which was published in London almost 500 years ago, had been bound into the frame of a larger volume. The discovery was made by Dublin City University professor, Colum Kenny, while researching the work of the Roman lawyer. Printed around 1535, it is thought that just ten copies have survived internationally.

It was 20 years before the very first book was printed in Ireland.

The volume is titled 'On Old Age' with a message for older people to appreciate the value of their experience which should also be held in regard by society.

It's very important to recognise the contribution that older people have to give.

The book now joins the King's Inns Library secure collection which includes its oldest volume, also by Cicero, dating from around 1485.
